Our 75th Anniversary Zion United Methodist
1905 Church 1980 Rural Walcott, North Dakota The Zion Evangelical Church was organized in 1888 with fourteen members. From 1888 to 1904 seven pastors served our congregation prior to the construction of our church building. On May 21, 1905 our new church was dedicated debt free at a cost of $2,900.00 with Rev. Wm. Gaines being the first regular pastor to serve us. In 1913 the form of service was changed from German to English. In 1915 the horse barn was built and on May 27-30, 1915 we hosted the North Dakota Annual Church Conference. Several remodeling projects took place. The first was a new basement in 1927 at a cost of $2,000.00. In the late thirties our steeple was struck by lightning and rebuilt to its present state. In 1963 a new heating system, basement entrance, restrooms, modernization of the kitchen and redecoration of the basement were completed at cost of $7,000.00. Our latest remodeling of the church sanctuary took place in 1978 at a cost of $12,454.00. In 1953 the Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren Church thus becoming the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Then in 1973 the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the Methodist Church and we became the Zion United Methodist Church. During the past 75 years our church has been served by twenty-three pastors and is currently served by the Rev. Barbara Bullock. Our current membership is sixty-six.
