Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ellendale, North Dakota was organized May 20, 1923. The first sermon was preached in the rented Presbyterian Church. On October 6, 1927, the congregation bought the church. From 30 members the congregation grew to make the building unsuitable, and the present church was built in 1953. First services were held there on Good Friday, 1954, with the dedication taking place in November of the same year. A new electronic pipe organ was installed in 1993. The independent access addition was added onto the east side of the church in 1994. New stained-glass windows and a new speaker system were added in 1997. A dedication service for the addition, organ, and speakers was held on June 22, 1997.
