1877-1977
The United Methodist Church dates back to August 12, 1877. The first settlers in Bertha area organized the church under the supervision of Rev. Heinrich Boettcher, superintendent of the Wadena Mission. First meetings were held in homes, later in the school. Rev. Martin Bredehoeft was the first pastor. John Ristau was the first Sunday School superintendent. Village of Bertha was later named in honor of his wife, Bertha. In 1891 the first church building was erected, three- and one-half miles southwest of where Bertha would later be built. In 1959 a new church was built in Bertha, first service being held Nov. 22, 1959. Present pastor Rev. John Rehnberg.
