ST. TIMOTHY'S PARISH-1882-1982
Construction of the first Catholic church and rectory in Manvel started under the supervision of Mr. James Carroll, Pembina, Dakota Territory, on January 19, 1882. Because many of these early settlers were of Irish background, it was only proper that the first Mass in their new church be celebrated by their pastor, Father John Considine, on the feast of St. Patrick, March 17, 1882. The seating capacity of this building was 150 and the cost with the rectory to that date came to $1,961.72. When both were finished to the satisfaction of the parish, the total cost for both church and rectory was approximately $3,000.00. A few of the names we find in the earliest records were: Anstett, Colosky, Ferry, Murphy and Nagle.
The exact date the first Catholics moved into the Manvel area is not known but seems to have been sometime during the 1870's. Most of these first settlers were of either Irish or French-Canadian descent and many came from Packenham, Ontario, Canada. Before the parish had its first resident pastor, Father John Considine, these Catholics were visited by priests from the Grand Forks and Pembina area. Two priests who must have spent more time than others were a Father O'Reily and a Father McMannes.
According to all records, Father Considine moved into his new rectory in the spring of 1882. Before that date his time in the Manvel area was spent with him living much of the time at the home of Peter Ferry. In 1891, Father Considine left Manvel and moved to Minto to St. Patrick's Parish. From Minto he served Manvel, Ardoch and Minto. Because of poor transportation, Father would leave Minto by train on Saturday afternoon for Manvel. He would stay overnight at the home of L.J. Zimmer, offer Mass early Sunday morning, catch a train to Ardoch so he would be in time to offer Mass at the parish of St. John the Baptist, and then go by horse to Minto for a third Mass that day.
Parish records in Manvel date back to 1908 with all records prior to that date being kept in Minto. It is rather difficult from these records to name the various pastors during Manvel' s very early days but we do find names, after that of Father Considine, like McGillicuddy, Meyer, O'Driscoll and Koelmann. It does appear that Father Virgil Koelmann was the pastor of Reynolds, and he had Manvel as his mission parish starting in 1908.
In 1918, St. Timothy's Parish became a mission to the newly established St. Mary' s Parish in Grand Forks. From that time until May 1957, Monsignor M. J. Fletcher was in charge of St. Timothy's. It was during this time, 1923, that the present brick church was built, a church with a seating capacity of 250 and for a cost of $25,000.00.
In June 1957, Bishop Leo F. Dworschak established St. Timothy's as a parish and named Father Raymond Scheller its first pastor in residence since the early 1900's. Under Father Scheller' s guidance, the church was renovated, and a contemporary, modern rectory was built in 1958-1959. Father Scheller served the parish until 1960. The priests who succeeded him to this date were: Father Gerald Weber 1960-1961; Father Robert Sauter 1961-1965; Father Richard Carey 1965-1968; Father Neal Kapaun 1968-1969; Father Joseph Hylden 1969-1972 (deceased); Father Stephen Dickinson 1972-1974; Father Chester Kochan 1974-1979; Father Alvin Kartes 1979 - present.
Father Kartes, the present pastor, came to Manvel from Hunter, North Dakota. Father is a native of Mt. Carmel, North Dakota, was ordained in 1956 for the Diocese of Fargo and he has served parishes such as Harvey, Minnewaukan, Tolna, McHenry, Aneta, Hunter and Argusville. Besides the parish of St. Timothy's he is also Pastor of St. John the Baptist's Parish, Ardoch.
St. Timothy's Parish has a membership of ap· proximately 400. It has an active Parish Council, formed in 1975, known as the Parish Club. The present officers of St. Timothy's Parish Club are Donald Devine, President; Mrs. Allen (Elaine) Hobbs, Secretary; Robert P. Hoverson, Treasurer; and the Directors are Gary Bums, Glenn Callahan, and Gerald Sweeney. The Parish Trustees are Francis Bushaw and Thomas I. Ferry, Sr.
Members of this parish who are in the religious life are Father John Earl Ferry, son of Joseph and Margaret Ferry, who lives at Lisbon, North Dakota; and Sister Michele (Dorothy) Murphy, daughter of Michael and Luella Murphy, who lives at Marshall, Minnesota.
