The early Catholics were mostly Irish Canadians from Ontario, and their first mass was held in 1882 at the home of Peter Thrush, one and one-half miles northwest of Crystal, by Father Jean Malo. In 1886 services were held in the Stokesville School, following which St. Bernard's Church was built in the Stokesville area, under the guidance of Father Kenny - the first church in the Crystal parish. In 1890, A. F. Appleton donated lots 1 and 2 on Appleton Avenue and Front Street and St. Patrick's Church was begun with the first mass celebrated in 1892. The first trustees were Patrick O'Toole and Daniel O'Sullivan. This church was finally moved to Auburn where it is being used by the migrants who come to work in the sugar beet fields. The imposing new structure on the northeast corner of Garfield Avenue and Fourth Street was erected in Crystal in Hl49. Msgr. Petr Lekavy officiates at present. Sister Lawrence of the Sisters of the Presentation, Fargo. and daughter of the late Patrick O'Tooles, is a spiritual daughter of the church.
