St. Matthew's was organized on January 19, 1915, although preaching services had been conducted in 1914. The first pastor was Rev. G. Lienhardt. In 1916. St. Matthew's built their first house of worship. Pastors who have served this congregation: Rev. G. Lienhardt, 1915-1917; Rev. M. A. Berner, 1917-1922; Rev. H. E. Dusker, 1923-1925; Rev. F. Wolfail, 1926-1933; Rev. G. Hinz. 1933-1936; Rev. G. Gerike, 1936-1941; Re. G. H. Fiechtner, 1941-.
The congregation now numbers 535 baptized souls and 350 communicant members. Sunday School enrollment, 150. L. W. M. L. membership 31. L. L. L. membership 38. Walther League membership, 29. Choir membership, 30.

St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hazen This church was organized Jan. 19, 1915. The following year the first church was erected. Before that time, services had been conducted in the homes. Their first pastor was Rev. G. Lienhardt, 1915-1917. The present pastor is Rev. G. H. Fiechtner. In 1940 a larger building was constructed which was destroyed by fire in January 1954. The present building was dedicated July 10, 1955.
