Peace Lutheran Church
75th Anniversary 1909-1984
Hazen, North Dakota
On April 9, 1909, a group of six German Russian immigrant families met at a schoolhouse about two miles west of the present townsite of Hazen to form a new Lutheran Congregation. The Congregation was founded with the name "Evangelisch-Lutherische Friendensgemeinde," which was changed to Peace Lutheran in 1950.
The congregation worshipped in a schoolhouse for several years. By 1914 the long-awaited railroad had been completed, and the town of Hazen was established. Shortly thereafter, the congregation began worshipping in town. They built their first church in Hazen which was dedicated in 1915. It was located a block south of the present Mobile Station.
The church continued to grow and by 1944 the congregation decided to build a new church. The church at which we presently worship was dedicated in 1950.
During the time St. John Congregation at Krem and the St. Paul Congregation at Red Butte united with Peace Congregation. The St. Peter Congregation north of Hazen disbanded in 1958 and they also joined the congregation.
The congregation presently consists of 950 members as we celebrate its 75th anniversary year.
