Mysteria® Adansonii
Gifted to me from my Sister August 3, 2026
Mysteria® Adansonii, a visually striking cultivar of Monstera adansonii, is known for its perforated leaves and fast-growing, climbing or trailing habits, making it a favorite indoor tropical vine.Mysteria® Adansonii, also commonly called the Swiss Cheese Vine or Monkey Mask, features heart-shaped, fenestrated leaves that develop holes over time as the plant matures.
Juvenile leaves may initially be solid, but fenestrations appear as the plant grows. This tropical plant belongs to the Araceae family and is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, where it often grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees to access filtered sunlight. Indoors, it typically reaches 3–8 feet tall and 1–3 feet wide, while outdoors it can grow up to 10–13 feet.
Mysteria® Adansonii is sometimes confused with the rare Monstera obliqua, but adansonii is far more common and widely available. It is known for being vigorous, easy to propagate, and versatile in indoor settings.

Light Requirements
- Bright, indirect light is ideal for leaf development and healthy growth.
- Can tolerate medium light, but growth may become leggy and fenestrations may develop less.
- Avoid direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch delicate leaves.
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Check moisture before watering.
- Ensure good drainage and avoid allowing the plant to sit in water to prevent root rot.
- Overwatering leads to yellow leaves, whereas underwatering causes drooping, curled, or brown-edged leaves.
- Indoor watering frequency averages once per week, adjusted for pot size, season, and humidity.
- Use a well-draining, chunky aroid soil mix, such as potting soil with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir.
- Humidity of 50–70% or higher is preferred; misting or humidifiers can help indoors.
- Thrives in 60–85°F (15–29°C) for optimal growth.
- Sensitive to cold; avoid exposure below 50°F (10°C) to prevent damage.
- Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), typically every 2–4 weeks.
- Reduce or halt fertilization during dormancy in fall and winter.
- Mysteria® Adansonii is a climber and benefits from using a moss pole, trellis, or stakes to train growth upwards, encouraging larger leaves and fuller foliage.
- Leaves tend to grow larger when climbing rather than trailing freely.
- Stem cuttings with at least one node root easily in water or moist soil.
- Air layering can also be used for larger plants.2 Sources
- Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, thrips, aphids, and scale; inspect leaves and stems regularly and treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Common signs of issues:
- Yellow leaves: overwatering
- Brown, crispy edges: low humidity
- Leggy growth: insufficient light
