1885 Centennial 1985
Wyndmere, North Dakota
Wyndmere was named by Englishman from an old English word composed of two names. "Wynd", meaning
narrow lanes or wind, and "mere", meaning pools or lakes. The town was formed by the merger of two small villages, Wyndmere and Moselle.
The N.P. railroad came first in 1883; the Soo followed in 1888. Wyndmere was then platted and built at the point where the two railroads crossed.
The Earl School was built in 1903, Wyndmere High School in 1923, and both were razed in 1984.
Prior to the organization of the Wyndmere Lutheran Congregation, the Ladies Aid was organized in 1901, with meetings held in homes. The Norwegian church services were conducted in various places from 1904-1913, until the church was built in 1914.
The Methodist church was first organized in the year 1893 at Moselle, N. Dak. In 1899, the congregation voted to move the church to Wyndmere and was moved and placed on its present location in 1900.
The St. John's Catholic Church was planned by a record of petition from the charter members and erected in 1913.
Wyndmere became known as Richland County Corn Capitol beginning in 1932 and later as State Corn Capitol. This continues as "Wyndmere Crop Show" to the present time.
We honor our pioneers at this Centennial Celebration June 28, 29, 30, 1985.
