Pastor Bartling from Marion, ND was going thru the country looking for Lutherans in the year 1886. He stopped at Emil Schultz and his bride to be, Fredericke Krause was there visiting. They asked him to marry them since they wanted a Lutheran Pastor and had planned to go to Casselton. After this, arrangements were made with other Lutheran families in the vicinity to have services in the homes of families and this was how Immanuel Congregation got its start.
Ella Schultz was the first baby to be baptized. First regular Pastor was Rev. Groh from the years 1889 to 1894. Plans were made on March 10, 1890, to organize Immanuel Lutheran Church of Harlem. the first officers were, Herman Fick, Gottlieb Saewert, Emil Schultz, Henry Bruns, C. Milbrandt & F. Krause. The original church was constructed in 1908 by Robert Schmidt at a cost of $1700. Property being donated by Mr. & Mrs. August Bruns.
January 1922 St. Lukes Congregation of Stirum was formed because of distance to Immanuel both being served by the same pastor. This congregation flourished until 1944 & they again joined Immanuel.
In 1949 the church was remodeled & a basement put in, also interior re decorated. A new church was built & dedicated on June 20, 1965, along with celebrating their 75th Anniversary. On July 27, 1980, they observed their 90th Anniversary as a congregation. Rev. Terry Martin is the present pastor.
