Hylestad Congregation, located six miles northeast of Buxton, was organized on February 15, 1899, when a group of people gathered at the community schoolhouse B. Harstad, President of the Norwegian Synod, was president at the meeting.  Charter members of the congregation were Ole P. Tveden, Jorgen Broe, Knud O. Hovet, Thor O. Hovet, and Saare Brokke families.  The first trustees were Knud O. Hovet, OLe Tveden and Jorgen Broe.

In June 1899 Ole P. Tveden gave two acres of land on which to build a church.  Donations to the building fund reached $525.00.  In 1893 the church was completed.
       
​The following pastors have served this congregation: P. T. Hilmen, 1890 to 1894; A. A. Oppegaard, 1894 to 1897; K. S. J. Hovde, 1897 to 1901; S. K. Thollehaug, 1901 to 1904; L. A. Haatvedt, 1904 to 1912; S. K. Tollehaug, 1912 to 1918; J. C. Hjelmorvik, 1918 to 1921; M. B. Lokkesmoe, 1921 to 1923; J. M. Johnson, 1923 10 1935; Karl Stomme, 1935 to 1951. Hylestad Congregation was dissolved in 1952.

​A 2015 cemetery sign indicates it is called "Hylestad Church Cemetery" and the undated sign below is "Hylestad Cemetery." There is very little information, but this is definitely a pioneer cemetery with the earliest burial in 1878. The established date for the church and cemetery could not be found but in 1920 the church became part of the Buxton Lutheran Parish with some other area churches and in 1952 it was dissolved. The cemetery remains active. FindAGrave has a burial as late as 2019. Other spellings for Hylestad include Hillestad, Hylestad, Hillstad, Hillstead, Hyllestad, and Hillistad.
