  • Hoya ‘Grey Fairy’ is the accepted and established name for a unique cultivar (Art.11.4 Brickell et al. 2016).
  • ‘Grey Fairy’ is a selected spontaneous sport of Hoya (carnosa x serpens) ‘Mathilde’
  • Alike to Hoya ‘Mathilde’ in form but differentiated by full “stable silver-white foliage which does not fade.” (US Plant Pat.36,356,P2). See this same patent for detailed first botanical description including full RHS color references.
  • Shen Xiangang, Wang Dongliang, and Wu Wanying each of Chuzhou, China.
Plant Care Tips
  • Light Requirements - Hoya Mathilde thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near an east or west-facing window, where it can receive plenty of filtered sunlight without being exposed to direct rays that could scorch its delicate leaves. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, this may slow its growth and flowering. If you notice stretched or leggy growth, it may be a sign that your plant needs more light.
  • Watering Needs - Watering Hoya Mathilde requires a balance to avoid overwatering or underwatering. Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering, as this plant doesn’t like soggy roots. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the cooler months when growth slows. Use only pots having holes at the bottom to allow for drainage and water to never accumulate at the bottom.
  • Humidity & Temperature - Hoya Mathilde thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 50-70%. If your home has dry air, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray with pebbles and water to boost humidity. As for temperature, this plant prefers a range between 60-80°F. Avoid exposing it to drafts, sudden temperature changes, or cold air, as these can stress the plant.
  • Soil & Potting Mix - The ideal soil mix for Hoya Mathilde should be well-draining and slightly airy to mimic its natural epiphytic environment. A mixture of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based potting soil works well. This ensures the roots receive adequate oxygen while avoiding water retention that could lead to root rot.
  • Fertilizing Hoya Mathilde - To encourage healthy growth and flowering, fertilize Hoya Mathilde once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause salt buildup in the soil and damage the roots. During the dormant season (fall and winter), you can pause feeding until active growth resumes.
