Hjerdal Lutheran Church
The Hjerdal Congregation was organized on March 24, 1909, when five families met at the Christ Roebuck home. Those present were the M.A. Holte, Gunder Setran, Ed Holte, Peter Thoreson and Christ Roebuck families. This group agreed to organize a congregation under the name of Hjerdal Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of McHenry County.
Peter Thoreson offered a piece of land on which to build a church and place a cemetery. M.A. Holte, Christ Roebuck and Gunder Setran were appointed as a committee along with Peter Thoreson to look over the land being offered. They were to report at the next meeting to be held on March 30. This new congregation was to contact Pastor Olaf Rossing as they desired to meet with him at their next meeting.
The next meeting was held at the Christ Roebuck home at which time the committee reported that they had looked over the land offered and had selected one and a half acres on which to build their church.
The first officers elected were: Rev. Olaf Rossing, president; Peter Thoreson, Ed Holte and Gunder Setran, trustees; Johannes Roebuck, treasurer; and M.A. Holte, secretary. The minister’s salary was to be a free will offering the first year. The congregation's annual meetings were to be held on the first Monday in December every year.
On March 29, 1916, the Hjerdal Congregatlon voted to build a church next to the cemetery. Funds for the building were obtained by donations from members and friends of the congregation, the Ladies Aid and a small loan from the bank. The cost of the new building was $2,065. Hjerdal Lutheran Is still very much alive with a Sunday School department and an active American Lutheran church Women organization. They celebrated their 75th Anniversary in 1984.
