Grace Lutheran Church 1940 - 1984 Oakes, North Dalota
The Salem Lutheran Church was organized in 1905, the product of the merger of Swedish Free Mission Church (chartered in 1895) and the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Salem Church of Oakes. The new church was a member of the Augustana Synod.
The First Lutheran Church was organized in 1921, a combination of Norway Evangelical (charted in 1883) Grue Evangelical (chartered in 1894) and Ebenezer Lutheran (chartered in 1904) churches. First Lutheran was a member of the Norwegian Lutheran church of America Synod.
In 1940 Salem Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church merged and became the American Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oakes. It was a member of the American Lutheran Conference. Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Clement township in rural Oakes, became a sister congregation and began to be served by the same pastor.
In 1951 the church building was enlarged to its present structure. In 1964 the name was changed to Grace Lutheran Church and a new constitution was written. It soon became a member of the newly formed American Lutheran Church Synod.
A new parsonage, located north of the church at 121 North Ninth Street, built in 1966.
An education addition was constructed in 1977, and the church basement was remodeled in 1983.
