Nazarenes are City’s Youngest
The Church of The Nazarene had its beginning August 15, 1944, under the leadership of Rev. and Mrs. Owen Burke. The congregation used the Vicker building, located on highway 81, as their first worship place The first worship service was held on October 3, 1944, with Rev Burke as pastor. During the next few months special services were held with pastors of the district doing the preaching.
The church had its official organization day in Hillsboro on March 11, 1945, with Rev. Jeffries, district superintendent officiating. There were seven charter members. To date all charter members who helped to begin the church are living.
July 30, 1945, plans were laid to build a new church building. The building was completed in the winter of 1946. The first service in this new building was held on February 24, 1946.
The congregation in the fall of 1946, under the leadership of Rev. Edwin Zimbelman, purchased a house from Mr. Henry Mergenthal This house was moved to the church lots and used as a parsonage until the spring of 1955. Plans for a new parsonage had been made during the winter of 1954 and construction of the building was begun in July of 1954 and was completed in March of 1955, under the leadership of the present pastor, Rev. Herbert Ketterling. At that time the old parsonage was sold and moved from the church premises.
The records will reveal that much donated labor has gone into the construction of both the church building and the parsonage. These labors came from friends and members. To date the church has been served by five pastors, whose periods of service range from one to four years. Rev. Zimbelman is in California at present Rev. Roy Coplin, who, served the Hillsboro Nazarene church from 1947 to 1950, is at present a missionary in the, Philippines. The present pastor, Rev Herbert Ketterling, came to Hillsboro in February of 1952.
No church is built without sacrifice, and the Nazarene, Church has seen its members sacrifice their time, labor and money to bring it to its present status.
We trust as we worship within the walls of these buildings that we remember those who have labored so faithfully when the church was started. The church was built to serve the people within this area We trust that this desire can be fulfilled. The charge of Christian service comes not only from man but from God.
