Church of God, Goodrich
Began With Camp Meetings
The Church of God at Goodrich had Its beginnings through people attending a camp meeting in 1917 or 1918 at Wing, N.D. After that the individuals who had become Interested in the scriptural emphasis of this movement began having services in individual homes and in rural schoolhouses both south and north of Goodrich. Following these camp meetings regular services were held in schoolhouses. These services were all in the German language. No pastor was with the small church groups in those years, but various ministers traveled through and gave encouragement.
In 1931 Rev. Julius Boetcher came and helped to better organize the church group and Sunday School was started. He kept in periodic touch with the church and in 1933 he persuaded Miss Emilia Blaskowsky to come and pastor the church. In 1935 they purchased their first church building, a rural Mennonite Brethern building, and moved it into Goodrich where both the North and South groups then began meeting together.
The congregation grew under various pastors and in 1943 a larger and newer building in the center of the city of Goodrich was purchased, again from the Mennonite Brethern people.
This building is still being used by the congregation today, in recent years there has been extensive remodeling and refurnishing of the Interior of the edifice. Presently the Goodrich Church of God has 15 families and is served by Pastor Milbert A. Ortman.
