Bruflat Lutheran Church of Portland was organized of December 20, 1874, by Nils H Heskin, Hendrik N. Heskin and Nils Skogstad and their families, together with the Reverend Bjug Harstad as Pastor. The name "Bruflat" was for the church in Etnedal, Norway which organized in 1774.
These pioneers in the Goose River Valley of Dakota built their first church home in 1879, and it serves them well until 1882. With the first coming of the railroad, Portland was platted, and the members of Bruflat decided to move into town, where they erected a church that year. It was renovated in 1906, and a pipe organ was given by the young people of the congregation.
On January 1, 1916, while the preparations were underway for a wedding, the building and all contents were destroyed by fire. Plans immediately began for a new church home on the same site-the top of the hill.
On July 12, 13, and 14, 1974, Bruflat celebrated its 100th Birthday. The activities included a Norwegian service, and an old-fashioned Ladies Aid, together with much visiting and reminiscing.
Trinity Lutheran Church of Roseville was organized in 1880, by Reverend Bersvend Anderson. It was located at the Roseville siding, four miles south of Portland. They affiliated with Bruflat congregation on January 17, 1927, and were then served by the same pastors as Bruflat. In 1964, the ten remaining families decided to merge with Bruflat Congregation.
A new parsonage was built in 1969, to replace the original house erected in 1902. Bruflat's membership totals 341 baptized members. The Bruflat Parish now consists of three churches - Norway and AAL, east of Mayville; and Bruflat. They are served by Pastor Allan Turmo, who came here in September 1972.
