The Augustana congregation was organized on September 17, 1875, by Rev. A. A. Scheie. The first annual meeting was held in the Peder Martinson home on October 24, 1876. The following officers were elected:
Deacons: Ole E. Olson, Anthony Scheie, Peder Martinson, Christian H. Brurud, Lauris L. Houske, Theodore O. Stennes.
Trustees: A. O. Serum, A. O. Paulson, B. A. Flesjer
Secretary: Andrew O. Paulson
From 1877 until 1885 services were conducted in a log schoolhouse about three miles east of the present Augustana Church, on the Ole Paulson farm. Mrs. O. B. Hom and Mrs. M.A. Bratland were confirmed in this schoolhouse about 1881. Mrs. Nels Enger was confirmed there in 1882.
The first couple married in the newly formed congregation was the son of Rev. Scheie, John Ludwig Scheie and Betsy Thompson on November 4, 1876. He also married A.O. Serum and Anna Johnson Rostvold on December 15, 1887, and Rev. O.A. Th. Solem and Ellen Johanna Knudson on January 7, 1878 (This was Rev. Solem's first marriage).
Three babies were baptized on September 12, 1875, five days before the congregation was organized. They were Andrew Scheie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Scheie; Marie Ann Paulson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Paulson; and Ida Paulson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Paulson. The first baby baptized two days after the congregation was organized was Sophia Paulson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Paulson. The date of baptism was September 19, 1875.
The earliest confirmation record was Rev. Scheie's last class in 1880. Members of that class were: Malena Holm; J. J. Flikka; John A. Rustvold; Iver Ellingson; Aage Tommerdahl; and one unidentified member. This class was confirmed in the old log schoolhouse.
One of the first children baptized in the new church building built in 1885 was Albert Stole. Tollef Hoiland and Isabel Arneson was the first couple married in this church. The first group confirmed in the new church on November 1, 1885, were: Albert E. Olson; Jacob Stennes; Barbro Berg; Christ Bell; Ole Selnes; Christofer Eugleseth; Lars Larson and Mike Bell. Some of these mentioned were from St. Petri and Pontoppidan Congregations, as confirmation was conducted only in Augustana that year.
